Can’t Paint? Ideas to Decorate Plain Walls

By December 6, 2018December 13th, 20182 Comments

Sometimes you can’t paint the walls of a room. Some apartments, college dorms are two that come to mind. Those sterile plan white walls can be a little cold feeling.  Aside from inexpensive posters what else can be used to decorate plain white walls to spice up the room?

Can’t Paint consider removable wall treatments

There are many removable wall treatments available now that can transform boring walls. When you can’t paint consider rub on decal/stickers, removable wallpaper, stick on tiles and even removable shiplap! All of these can morph a room from boring to a lot more exciting.

Wall decals/stickers

These are available at craft stores, dollar stores and online. They can be small or large. You can use images, shapes or sayings of inspiration. They are easy to apply and easy to remove. Using a little creativity you can create a great focal point. Consider a college dorm room, add an inspirational saying or maybe the mascot. In an apartment use them to create a focal wall. Be creative!

Removable wallpaper

This product is pretty cool because you can commit to wallpaper but it is easily removable without damaging a wall. It may be a little more expensive than painting a room though. This peel and stick product is a great option for an apartment, but also a home. You can use wallpaper in a lot of different areas in your home other than just doing the walls too. It comes in various patterns, many that are in style now.

Stick on tiles

These look just like real tiles. Known to have a three-dimensional feel to them. You do not have to grout them, they are easy to cut and easy to apply. You can get them from big box hardware stores, and online. The adhesive back keeps them up, but they are easy to remove. If you can’t paint your bathroom or laundry room these may be a nice added touch to consider. Also, consider these in a kitchen to add some interest to the backsplash. Stick on tiles are excellent for a simple fix, but may not bring value to your house when it is time to sell. Therefore they may be better to consider for rental spaces.

Peel and stick shiplap

The ever growing popular shiplap as a decorating detail. You can now get it in peel and stick. How great is that! Think when the fad dies you can easily remove it without a lot of fuss. I first saw Stikwood at a decorating show and thought what a great idea. There is also Wallplanks  that manufactures this too. It is lightweight wood that can be installed without nails. Although you may need a table saw to cut these smoothly they are easy to install to give your walls a unique look.
